How smooth are your Sebbies?

I have a small sebby and I dont think the action is as smooth as it should be. It seems like the lockbar is putting too much pressure on the blade, making it hard to open. When I close it I just hold the knife parallel to the ground and push the lockbar to the side, and the blade drops down like butter.
Is there any way that I can get It to open smoother? Should I lube the ball bearing and its path of travel aloung the blade?
Thanks for any suggestions!

Upon receipt of a new Sebbie I immediately take it apart and clean everything with brake cleaning spray. This stuff has a very fast evaporation rate and does clean well. The next thing I do is break out my Dremel tool with polishing wheels and commence to polishing!:D I polish the phospher/bronze washers, the bearing, the blade flat that contact the washers, and the pivot pin that the bearing slides over. I usually will apply flitz or something similar to do this then use the polishing wheel to bring it to a high gloss. Oncedone I apply new grease ( usually CRK brand, but sometimes another brand) reassemble, and use.

I have found out that if I tighten the screws while the blade is in the closed position AND start at the pivot screw that the lockbar will end up covering about a third of the blade tang allowing for any wear that might occur. I don't like to have the locking bar come all the way over on the tang surface.

This litle operation is a very satisfying part of a new Sebbie for me. Plus it works well, and really allows for a smooth opening.

This is just one man's way of doing things. Yours may differ:eek:  :D

I'm with Art !

Within 30 minutes of arrival. . .I take it down, give it a good bath with warm water and dish soap, relube and slap it back together.

All of mine are buttery smooth ! :D

Just got my first small sebenza last week...and today the CRK grease I ordered arrived. Guess it's time for me to take this apart and clean/relube it all. :)

It's pretty smooth as it is, but as it was made nearly a year ago (guess it sat on that internet vendor's shelves for a while!), I figure it'd like some nice fresh grease...

hmmm.... When I get a new sebbie, I just open the box it came in, take it out, and begin playing with it. Seems to have been a good systam so far... ;)

If you think the lock is too tight another suggestion is to very very carefully bend the lock bar back away from the blade.I've got 2 sebbies and they both were a little tight for my tastes.I sightly bent the lock bar very little and slowly got both of them to where I like it.I tried a lot of sebenza's and when new the lock is a little too tight for me.You must be careful not to over bend it or you're going to get a lot of problems. The lock on my sebbie's still cover 1/2 the tang on lock up.I don't think Chris Reeve would reccommend this but it worked for me.

......the next new Sebbie that arrives will be buttery smooth, I promise you that!:D The one you are getting is one of the smoothest I've had and the lock bar covers around 30% to 40% of the blade tang. BTW it did go out Friday morning via USPS Priority so it should be there by Tuesday(?) Let me know what you think!

Mine was a bit tight at first. I took it apart and used 2000 grit wet/dry paper to polish the bronze washers. They had some small scratches on them that caused the opening action to be a little too stiff for my tastes. All is smooth now. :)

Thanks Art!!! Yours went out then too. Hopefully each will arrive at the same time. I have know doubts that my meager mastery of "the force" will be all hat's needed to coax it open... :)

In anticipation of the small Classic ironwood that is coming in I've given my large Mad. Rosewood Classic a break and returned it to its box for a while. Course this necessitated breaking out my large leather Classic:D I got to fooling around with it and noticed it has a bit more drag than my woody. Broke it down and repolished everything and relubed it with CRK lube. Smoothed it up a bit but still not as smooth as my woody. Of course this is all relative, and really don't a whole lot since it is smoother than everything else I have or have had:eek: Anyway I really like the double thumbstuds and just may end up sending the large wood Classic back for them also.

Again, just some ramblings on a hot and dry summer afternoon here in the South!

BTW, you do know that the South is going to do it again don't you? Not sure what, but we are going to do it!;) :D

ROBB,

From what I understand, Chris Reeve definitely discourages adjusting the lock bar! They set each lock bar and test the knife before it leaves the shop.
