How stainless is Salt?

Thinking of buying a Salt for my dad for xmas. He's a fisherman and carries around a rusty "stainless" steel blade. I'm somewhat skeptical it is as stainless as advertised...any one spent much time with it at the ocean?

Extremely resistant, there have been test by forum members where it was submerged in sea water for a long time.
Try running some searches to find information here, I have noticed that you have been asking alot of commonly disscussed questions lately, and usually a search will bring up tons of good reading. I'm just trying to help you find stuff out, I really don't mean it in a rude way at all:)

I know on a Passaround that I was part of, we all tried to make it rust and nobody was able to. Some people left it in salt water, some sprayed salt water mist on it every so often and nobody saw any rust. I don't recall hearing or seeing any pictures of people that have a Salt and rust.

I think it is safe to say if you want to get your pops something that is reliable and strong and it will be used around water that the Salt series is the best way to go.

I've purposefully soaked my Salt 1 in vinegar to test it. I then left it out in the rain overnight opened and then loaned it to my neighbor who has a reputation for being extremely abrasive to anything he touches, especially knives and it passed all use and abuse tests with ease. H1 is one of my favorite steels and the Salt 1s I have are two of my all time favorite knives. I have one of each plain edge and serrated.

I routinely rinse whatever one I'm using under my outdoor facet if I've been cutting with it in the garden or if doing some kind of food prep with it in the kitchen I rinse and wash it under the facet there and just shake it off and stick it back in my pocket.

All summer long I rode my bike with it clipped in my pants and could literally wring my clothes out from the sweat when I got home and nothing bothered the knife where others before it had suffered. To get this kind of rust and corrosion resistance in any other knives you would have to go to a $135 David Boye dendritic cobalt alloy or a ceramic blade type knife. For the price the Salt knives are one of the best deals in all of cutlery. I can't recommend it enough. I think the Salt 1 is one of the best knives Spyderco has ever produced.

Two months immersed in ocean water could not corrode H-1 in tests.

I am testing a Tasman Salt prototype right now, and as corrosive as my sweat is I cannot get it to rust.

I think a Salt will be a safe purchase. :D

Frank K really performed the ultimate corrosion test on a Pacific Salt. Bottom line is, that even a Mermaid would be fine EDCing it. Extended periods AT the ocean? Pssshhaa, why don't you try extended periods IN the ocean (like a month long diving trip!) And the best is, not only the blade is stainless, the entire knife is pretty much corrosion proof, including the Ti clip!

Hey, I just had a thought...has somebody tried to strap a Salt knife to the hull of a U-boot yet? That would be a fun test!

I dont think that h-1 will really rust.. unless your interested in destroying it.

From everything I read here and on the Spyderco Forums, the Salt will NOT rust!! Get one!!
