How sweet would it be if BM could mod my 45S?

I just got a BM45S(thanks susan) and I asked benchmade if I could send it back to them and have them put in pivot screws like on the 42, and they said
"Sorry, but no.
The expense alone would be ugly if we could even find the shop time to squeeze in such a project."

I was kinda hoping this could be done..but ohh well...

Anyone out there that has a 45 can maybe answer this queston for me..
Will the handles on the 45 ever get to far "out of line" and somehow need to be retightened???

Before BM could do such a thing, they'd have to do some engineering work to make sure that the stresses would be ok, etc. It'd be like asking General Motors if they can take the seats out of a Pontiac and put 'em into an Oldsmobile for you. In theory, of course they can. I'm fond of saying you can do anything with enough duct tape. But, if they did it, they would suddenly become responsible for it, so they'd have to do a lot of studies and engineering work and so forth before they'd do it.

If you want to do it yourself, that's a different thing. They can't stop you. But, that way, they wouldn't be responsible for it.

If you work it out hard, eventually the handles on your 45 are going to get loose at the joints as the fork splays. This will take a lot of abuse on your part. When it happens, put two razor blades in the joint, one on each side, and then clamp the knife in a really big vice. Tighten very slowly. You want to give the metal lots of time here. Don't go to quickly or you'll crack it. The handles are made of very brittle metal and cracking is a serious possibility. Then, loosen it slowly as well. And it'll be tightened back up nicely.

It's like.. like.. like... uhm where's that smart witty analogy when I need it.. but yeah what makes the 45 desirable in MY opinion is of the hidden pins.. and I dont think you should worry about lose handles unless you work it like Master Clay

enjoy!

If you want screws I'll trade you my 42! That 45 is a keeper as is. (in mention of the pins)

Actually, you are a lucky soul to own one.

If you have half dozen of them I'd try to modify ONE. Otherwise, count your blessings and enjoy a fine piece.

Kind regards,
