how swordy is the ak-47

Weird question, huh? I'm thinking of getting one of these, but I wonder if I would need sword skills to use it decently. I don't want to get one and figure out the hard way that this knife-sword requires training to use.

I had a cheap 7" knife that I never used, so I sold it. However, I feel a void has been left and I want something to fill it. Is this overkill? Should I go for a 7-10" Busse first?

Also, how well could it function as a machete? I assume it is too light to work well, but figured I would ask anyway.

BTW I have been looking at Busse's for a long time but could never bring myself to pay so much for a knife. Crazy how times change :)

I have absolutely NO sword skills whatsoever and I get along just fine with my AK...

You had a seven inch that you never used, and selling it caused a void, so you want to fill it with 11 more inches? What do you plan on doing with it that would require any skills? I don't believe you need many skills to use it like a machete.

Why is it always the guys with the small blades, and never the guys with the big blades, who ask if size matters?

hahahaha

I handled Mike's AK at the Pro Gun show, and it was bigger than it looks in pictures, heavy too. It was definitely a sword.

I swing a 4 foot bush ax on a regular basis and several Busses and SRKW products at least once a week at work. (SH-E, Rat Daddy & Battle Rat) This sword makes them all feel clunky and slow. Yes, so far all that has been cut with the AK-47 is air but the weight and variable grip options give it balance and power. How many opportunities will YOU get to wail the $hit out of a scrub oak or some nasty swamp briars, I don't know, but when I get one for a user I'll be whackin' the hell out of 3" slash pines and kudzu!   :D

I want to buy an ak-47 as an investment and emergency tool. I plan to resell it in a few years if i need money and enjoy it in the mean time. I don't go outdoors as often as I'd like because i am a student, and I don't think I would use it as a machete anyway, but who knows.

The "void" i am referring to is a lack of a substantial emergency weapon. This is why i ask if the knife is easy to use or if i should go for something smaller.

Thanks for replies!

What kind of emergency are you trying to prepare for with a 29 inch "knife?" You don't mean... the inevitable zombie invasion, do you!?!? You need to get one for yourself as well as a spare for anyone else traveling in your party.

  They're coming!!! :D :D

I use my Heckler and Koch's for taking out zombies at distance. The AK is for when one manages to slip by the barrage of bullets, and get within arms length...

haha no, but i have thought about it. The emergency I was thinking about is more along the lines of natural disaster or some other situation where I would be force out of my home and in places where I couldn't trust people/animals. That is why I had the 7" knife (which also functioned as a "camp knife," but as i said I don't go camping).

I hope that zombies obey "Shaun of the Dead" rules--a whack to the head with a cricket bat takes them out :D

Unfortunately, the guy that you are likely to not be able to trust in that situation will probably have a machine gun, thereby possibly putting the odds slightly in his favor versus the AK sword.

absolutely true, on_the_edge
If I don't end up with enough money for the ak, my decision will be much easier.
Thanks for the help guys...its good to have sense talked into me

The AK is a great cutter, and well worth the $.

I EDC mine, although not on my person.

AK is actually shorter than my Japanese Swords (katana). I was surprised when I first handled it.

I think this review goes along way to answer the question... and actually pushes me closer to the ak-47 and skipping the rat daddy-

the difference is, you can still buy an AK47 at retail price. . .

A Rat Daddy is pretty hard to find even at a markup.

I do love my Rat Daddy, though :) (glad I got one when they came out)

:( :( :(

This thread has too much "tease" in it for me. The ak has me locked in its tractor beams as well. Great pic RF.
