Liner locks on your spyderco Militarty looking to get one for the wife as a self defense and utility use knife. she really likes the way they look and i've never really handled one for more than a few seconds and don't remember how the lockup was and how thick the linerlock is. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Never seen a Benchmade or a Microtech, so I can't help you. Not as thick as the one on my Emerson Commander, if you've seen one -- but the Military is steel, and the Commander is titanium, so I'd bet that the Spyderco is quite a bit stronger.

I'd trust my fingers to it. It's a Spyderco. Unless she's hammering on the spine or something, she'll be fine.

How about a frame lock?

If I were concerned about liner thickness, I would go with a frame lock like a Sebanza (darn good utility knife to boot).

I am chainging my opinion about using folders for defensive purposes. I realize that sometimes that's all you've got so you make due. I worry about the thickness of liners and choose a Strider AR as an EDC/defensive folder. Even the liners on my '98 Emerson Commander makes me unseasy now (after seeing the AR). But I can't imagine my wife wanting to carry an AR. But a Sebenza...maybe I could see that.

Good luck with your choice,

S.,

The liners on the Military that I used to own were quite thin, but seemed to be pretty strong. It was a very nice knife. Light, sharp out of the box and no blade play. I liked it. It was sold to make way for my changing tastes (custom knives).

Most liner locks are more than strong enough for their intended purpose. The real danger is slippage, not breakage. If liner locks are properly designed and fitted they won't slip. The pivot will break before the lock.

I have a great deal of confidence in my Spyderco Military. It is lightweight, but very tough. Everything fits perfectly. The only folders I would completely trust in a survival situation are my CRK Large Sebenza and my Spyderco Military.

of course TTO uh i mean Ice would never carry a civillian after first hand "experience" with them. he should just get his wife a handgun after all it was effective when he used it before right?
