I have a blade for an order that was pulled. I ground the tip extra thin for skinning.
For what I normally do this wont take the abuse but would cut like a razor twords the tip.
Should I finish it? I just dont want this knofe coming back because someone snaped the tip. Guess I could use it at home.............

Finish it. The tip shouldn't snap on you, even if it is thin.

Of course, if it does, then tell them to not stick it in trees. ;)

Thanks Michael,
Maybe I will have one on my available page soon.............it has been blank all but one week. Not that I am complaining but it would be nice to surprise a lurker and have one thats ready to go :D

Danbo,
The job was canceled so I have a thin tiped blade that I can finish. I'll just have to make sure that the buyer knows this isnt a prying blade AT ALL~ :D

I like em thin but the best thing to do is test the tip by bending it over on a flat surface to see how it flexes. It should flex and spring back after moderate pressure. If it snaps off.. oh well just reprofile the blade. Tips are a funny thing, some are soft from over heating from losing temper during regrinding after heat treat, some are roasted and weak from enlarged grain during heating before the quench and just snap off from normal use. Stabbing trees is considered normal use except for skinners. If it is going to break I would rather have it snap in my shop than in the customers hands. Know what I mean? Wear safety glasses when performing this scientific test.

Thanks guys! I'll test after grinding the scale off then see what I got to play with :D

I snapped the tip off a kabar whilst using it as a throwing knife. The tip was not weak, didnt have large grain etc.... The rules of nature just won the battle. Tips break or bend. Give me any knife and I'll bet I can break the tip.

Good point Mark! I had a guys call me asking about knife thickness. He had a Tops 1/4" stock knife that the last inch or so broke off. Guess I'll finish it as long as its used as a slicer ;)
