How tight should custom 110 be?

I was playing with some of the knives in my Buck collection the other day. I held up an open Custom Shoppe 110 To the lamp and looking in to the open knife, light rays penetrated The back spring, one side of the scales etc.
I did the same with a open cheap Schrade. The Shrade was tight, and if you looked into the open knife, you could not see the light. Whats the deal? is that normal? My other bucks seem tighter than this high dollar custom job.
Porky:eek:

Ya know, you guys have gotten me to smell blades, bolsters, sheaths, wiggle things around, and now I just found myself holding up the four 110 units here within my reach to the light.

All four (BP 110 CPM154, Alaskan, BCS BG-42, and standard issue 110 Idaho stamp) have paper thin slivers of light shining through at the rear where you mentioned.

I have my other dozen or so 110s in the closet and a mess of beaters under the bed...but I'm convinced. 4 outta 4.

Proof that when you think it's somewhere the sun don't shine, it does.
Goose.

Goose,
I smelled my custom - What are they supposed to smell like? Can you send it back to Buck if it stinks?

The question is, does the blade wiggle? If not, you are OK. The air space will help it to dry out after it gets wet, not a problem.
If the blade is loose, though, that is a major issue.

I agree.

I can see a little light through all of my lockbacks regardless of the maker (Buck, Schrade, Spyderco, Moki, Cold Steel, Boker, and Case).
But as long as the lock-up is tight and secure, then there should not be a problem.
In fact, I did had one lockback, a Case Mako Shark, that was so tight that it was difficult to open and unlock--so sometimes tolerances can be TOO tight.

Thinking that PorkChop is wondering about the workmanship. All my nicer 110s have a sliver of light coming through and, generally, exhibit no blade play. I don't see it as a fault in form, fit, or function...Just another thing to examine as a curiousity. Kine like putting a 9volt battery on the tip of your tongue....you do it once and realize there's something to it.

With one exception, all my other lockbacks from other mfgs also have a gap.
That exception being my Weidmannsheil...just one very small spot of light.

The one thing I would really be concerned about is blade play.

Either lateral, or vertical when the blade is locked open. I have sent two customs back before because of these (loose blade) problems.

Some of mine do, some don't.... Maybe difference of a Monday or Wednesday.

Goose left out Taste test.........

taste the blade with a 9 volt battery connected. That will determine the quality of the steel's conductivity.
