How does one such as myself ( a New York resident) buy an automatic knife?

I am not looking for anything crazy. I want a Protech Runt.

Can I order one off the internet?

Will they ship it to me?

WHat is the worst case scenario?

I'm not sure about NY laws, but around where I live your best bet would be a gun and knife show.

Here in the midwest they sell them right out in the open at the shows and the law seems to be OK with it. ...Not sure if it's legal to ship them through the mail though without LEO or millitary ID.

It is definitely illegal in NY. But I see people all over the place here with autos in their collection. Wondering how they got them. Ny switch blade law seems consistent with laws across the country.

pawn shops, gun/knife shows would be your best bet. online dealers require proof that you are LEO or MIL before they will let you buy them and local dealers have to abide by any local sales laws as well.

I live near PA. What are auto laws like there? I know they have shows from time to time in PA.

As I understand NY law, its is illegal to buy or even possess a switchblade.

Legally, it does not matter. A switchblade is a switchblade. Size and appearance are unimportant.

Yes... although all the on-line retailers I have seen state you must be an LEO or active duty military before they will sell to you. (Note that some require proof like requests on official letterhead, etc. Others just seem to take your word.)

Will they ship it to me?
Yes... although strictly speaking shipping switchblades across state lines is a federal crime (LEO/Military may be an exception?)

Arrest and fine or imprisonment? :(

Why not just stick an assisted openers. The big ones seem to open slowly, but the small ones open like a spring snake out of a can of nuts! :D

No, they are not an exception. The only exceptions are dealers and government agencies buying with a signed purchase order. No individual is exempt from the federal law.

This post has probably been read by atleast 100 Leo's at this point, chomping at the bit to have a monkey pile on you.:)

For what's its worth, some companies, like BudK will put "cannot ship to CA, NY" in small print next to certain items in catalog, yet I have ordered and they have shipped me the item out here in CA. That was for daggers and throwing stars though, not automatics.

Where did you get this from? LEOs are exempt.
He's not talking about posession or purchase, but shipping across state lines. The Federal switchblade law is mainly about manufacture and transportation across state lines. There are no general prohibitions on possesion (except in specific federally controlled areas). Local laws which prohibit purchase or possesion of switchblades often make exceptions for LEOs, that that is local law, not Federal.

Having looked through the text of the law, I think he is right. The law only seems to make exemptions for shipping switchblades across state lines "...pursuant to contract with the Armed Forces". Members of the Armed Forces "...acting in the performance of his duty" and a person who "...has only one arm" can carry them on their person . Those seem to be the only three ways switchblades can legally cross state line. :(

I thought he meant carrying. Yes, the mail is technically very strict. You really cannot mail batteries either.

Why don't you try craigslist? I'm not sure if they'll be listed in NY, but they sure are in AZ. Check out flea markets. Or check out Chinatown if it's not too far away. Maybe you'll find one in one of the shops/flea markets.
