How to attach fire steel to kydex sheath?

Just got a new Fallkniven A-1 for future survival course.
Anyone have any suggestions on how to attach a flint rod to the kydex sheath like Jeff Randall's Laser Strike? Has to be secure yet accessible.
Thanks Bill

I use duck tape to secure items onto my kydex sheaths. It has worked well for me and might provide an additional survival item. It has withstood extreme changes in weather. The downside might be after several rewraps the tape looses a part of its ashesive power, so I only use items items attached in this way as back-up. For example, I carry a small bic lighter in my pocket. Great question. I hope to learn other methods from this thread.

The Swedish FireSteel (that I got from Bagheera) fits perfectly in a cordura .380 caliber magazine case made by Uncle Mike's of Oregon. I just lashed mine to the concealex sheath (made by Normark) for my Busse with some 550 cord.

It's not the pace of life that concerns me, It's the sudden stop at the end.

This might or might not be your style but... I like the security of the Kydex/concealex sheaths but sorta dislike the look and the noise. I bought some Buffalo hide and I make a sheath cover that is just 1/2 inch too small to fit over the sheath. The tube has a few bits of leather hanging here and there (tongs) and is laced with leather.

Drop the tube in warm water and allow it to soak for a few hours, when it is pliable you should be able to coax it onto the kydex. Once the leather dries it will have pulled in tight onto the sheath. After two days drying you can inject some sort of adhesive (some work, some don't) into the space between the leather and the plastic. This will keep the leather tight to the plastic and allow you to smooth the leather to the plastic.

If you had the foresight to add some leather tongs to the tube, you will have attachment points for anything from a mini survival kit to your sharpener.

None of mine have ever come loose despite the abuses they have undergone.

Hope that helps.

Thanks Ron. That is EXACTLY the type of information I was looking for. I love this forum. (Figuratively)

Simular to the Doc;
I piggy backed my A1 and F1 Fallknivens in their sheaths and then I sewed a piece of wet leather around both of the sheaths to form a kind of frog. Now I can carry both my F1 and A1 in one rig and the gap between the two sheaths would probably accomdate a ferrocium rod too, I just have mine in a seperate location. Before doing the piggyback I have to cut the belt loop off of the F1 sheath and grind down the back until it fit on the front of the A1 sheath.
Works for me!

Although it isn't in EXACTLY the same vein... I carry a little pocket knife with a metal belt clip. I usually carry the AL Mar Eagle tho' lately I've take to the SERE 2000... any way, the clip is removable on those blades (and reversable) so following the lead of one of my instructors, I cut a groove 2 inches long and 1/8 diameter (1/8 deep) into the G10 and directly beneath where the clip hits the scale. A mini sparking rod (ferrocerrium) slides right in and stays securely despite pulling the blade out of my pants and other normal activities. When I want the rod I just lift the clip with my thumb and the rod drops out... instant firemaking tool.

I've done similar things with most of my blades and have a pretty good stockpile of firemaking tools with me all the time.

Just a thought

I wonder if the plastic sheath makers are tuning into our thread. If they are, it seems to me that an opportunity has presented itself for them to step up and fulfill an current need. After all, leather sheath like the Randall models and others have contained sew-on pouches for years. How hard would it be for them to provide a pouch for plastic sheaths? On the other hand I hope they are not "listening", because the ideas presented here are original, custom made you might say, and I cannot wait to put them into parctice. Great information at what has to be unbeatable prices.

Hi Guys,

Just go to my photopoint pages and look and drool over the beautifull sheaths that Eric Noeldchen send me for both my Cold Steel Scouting knives (and SRK and Master Hunter

) and that he fitted with his custom solution to hold the "well known"
wink.gif
Swedisch Large Military Firesteel from Light-My-Fire.

Eric designed this when I traded some firesteels for sheaths with him and asked if he could attach a "firesteel holder" to the sheaths.

He cameup with this solution and it works perfectly for me, the firesteel is held solidly and I can even leave the metal scraper plate attached to the lanyard and "stuff that securely behind the belt clip attachement.

The whole combination is a joy for the eye and fit and finish are 110%.

Nice is that the firesteel attachement can be "retro-fitted" to sheaths from Eric that didn't have it as I think he sells the separate firesteel holder + Chicage screws + drill template if I'm correct.

Initially the firesteel holder was a very tight fit but a put a strip of paper between the two parts coming together and now it the steel fits perfectly with enough friction not to loose it in the field.
When you have scraped enough ferrocium of to start hundreths of fires you just remove the extra paper strip and tighten the chicago screws and it fits again with enough "suction" not to loose it.

Just look and drool at Eric's nice sheath + firesteel holder solutions

Bagheera, I visited your PhotoSite. Great answer for an existing question. Thank you. I especially like the Wave multi-tool sheath. At first I wondered what Counsel-of-Record liked so much about bladeforums and now I understand. "Counsel," I might have to get in touch with you for advice about how to deal with my wife. She hates your question because it is taking up so much of my "enjoyable" time. Hope you post more questions soon and this one is carried out to its ultimate conclusion some 500 post down the road.
