How to avoid waving an Emerson?

I rarely use the wave feature and I have the folder unclipped in my front pocket strong side tip up. I have come up with a method for withdrawing the folder without triggering the wave and that is by using my hand and gripping around the folder similarly to how one would grip a kubotan. My fingers extend further out than the hook so this prevents the hook from catching the pants. Does anyone else have a better suggestion for withdrawing a waved knife without activating the wave? Or should I just purchase a folder without the wave feature?

From what you've described, it sounds like you do what I do when I want to pull out the folder without waving it open. I grab around the spine and the handle to make sure I'm gripping it closed as I pull it out of the pocket. I don't get concerned with covering the wave, I just make sure it doesn't get pulled out along side the corner of my pocket so it doesn't get caught on the corner.

Yea, I think we do the same thing. If the hook does catch onto my pants, my grip will prevent it from opening. What part of the bay are you in? I'm usually between the east bay and south bay.

IMO, I think the wave feature is the best thing since sliced bread.

-Trade someone for a non-waved EKI and not worry about it then.
-Buy another EKI non-waved and have the option to go waved or nonwaved.
-Ruin your current knife with grinder.
-Grab the knife with all your fingers wrapped around it.

Hope this helps.

Right now I'm staying in Dublin, I grew up in East Oakland, and I'm moving to Los Angeles in a couple of weeks.

uh, try pulling it from the pocket without engaging the wave, its really not rocket science lol, rather than twisting it out to engage the hook when drawing twist it in so it wont hook the pocket.

i've never understood why this is a problem??

That's cool. I grew up in san jose and I went to school around LA. I still visit LA once in a while. It's a lot different than up here, that's for sure.

I will give that a try. I think the thought of having the hook there bothers me more. But when I grip the whole knife and withdraw, it has never partially opened/waved the knife. I pull it out straight up. I will try turning it in.

I don't have an Emerson, however, I do own a Endura 4 w/ Wave Hook(under license from Emerson) and I don't have a problem removing it from my pocket w/o it opening. All I do is not draw the knife across the edge of my pocket as I bring it out. I lift the knife straight up while holding the handle between my thumb and index and making sure that the hook doesn't touch the edge of my pocket.
