Hi All

It's my first time posting so I hope I'm posting in the right section.
Long story short I got myself a nice knife for my fishing trip this summer and basically, I didn't really think about storage and left it in the sheath after the trip.
Lessons learned..

How can I salvage this situation?

What's the best way to remove the rust build-up and polish this piece ??
It wasn't the most expensive but its more about sentimental value so would like to fix this if I can rather than just buy a new knife.

I appreciate all your help in advance.

Blade looks like damascus(?) with a dark etch. If so, I'd avoid trying to polish that - using polishing pastes like Flitz, etc., will strip the dark oxide etch away, which will leave the patterning of the damascus looking pretty bland & grey. I learned that the hard way, with one of my own knives.

For cleaning up the rust, scrubbing the blade with something like baking soda can remove most of that. Using some WD-40 along with that can also loosen up the red surface rust (let it soak a bit). The baking soda acts like a mild abrasive to dislodge the loosely-bound red rust, while still not being hard enough to strip the dark oxide etch away.
