Any ideas on how to break the lock-tight on a strider if no soldering gun is available?
Thank you for your time!

I used a screwdrivers.. I used 2 or 3.. I heated them up on the burner of the stove top oven.. I just set them on there and rotated them and kept a hot one on the screw constantly..

You will get it to break eventually.. it sucks, but it will finally break..

Best of luck..

Some people put the knife in boiling water. 212f is not enough heat to mess with the blade heat treat.

You could also put a nail on the stove to heat it up. A pair of pliers should allow you to place it on the screw head.

G10 can handle quite a bit of heat and I bet the inside of a black car gets close to that hot when it sits in the sun all day down here in Florida. I think you will be ok but I'm sure someone who has done it will chime in. Or a quick search might find more info on the method.

mmmm....sounds like the easiest way so far, but would the water mess-up the g-10 at all ya think?

Perhaps not the heat treat but if epoxy was used to assist in holding the G-10 you risk losing the seal...

Heat source to the screw and let it migrate to the loc-tite.

I had to burn the crap out of the loc-tite using the stove element and a hex bit.

Wouldn't only a fixed blade use epoxy to hold the G10 scales in place? I guess that is something to consider but I figured he was talking about a folder.

And for what it is worth, I had zero luck with a hair dryer. I guess if you used it long enough it could get enough heat inside the handle to break the bond but you would probably end up getting the surface hotter than boiling water.

I've tried using my little soldering iron, but it didn't get the screw hot enough. Even if it did, it'd only work on one screw at a time. I've had good success with microwaving a large mug of water until its near boiling and letting my knives soak for 10 minutes or so. No problems with the G-10.

BTW: max operating temp for G-10 is 284 F.
