How to Carve

Hey there knuts

I want a design on a sheath, but the local fellow has no experience carving, so doesn't want to give it a shot.

Can I carve after a sheath is made, or is it something better done before the final stages (whatever they are)?

If so, what should I use? I have scapels etc but a definitive list would be appreciated.

Should I use a stencil, go free hand?

Would practicing on a raw piece (scraps from the local trimming joint) be a good idea or is it very different?

Is acid a viable option?

I plan on it being black leather, would I need to dye the leather after carving?
I'd hate to ruin a 70 dollar sheath, but I'm willing to have a bash.

Thanks in advance.

You need to do you stamping and carving before so you can do it on a nice flat surface.Google up Tandy leather and you will see a supermarket of tools and equiptment to look thru.
