Am I doing it correct. I disengage the lock and wiggle the blade. Or am i sposed to have the lock engaged and check. I've always done it the way i first described, but i guess maybe i can learn something new?

i think of blade play as if the blade moves in any direction while in the open and locked position.

I test my caly's blade play while lock is engaged, because I use my knife only when lock is engaged. If blade wiggles slightly when its not locked, it doesn't bother me aslong it has no blade play when I am using it.

I guess both can serve a purpouse I just haven't tought any reason to test knife's blade play while its been unlocked.

Its supposed to b locked. If it isnt locked it is going to have substantial up and down blade play (vertical) :p

Well, it had bladeplay when locked. So i figured in order to get rid of it all i mays well take the lock out of the equation. Only side to side play though, no vertical.

So the common thing around here is to lockup the knife and check for play? Where does one grab the blade? Tip? Tang? Mid?

i check for bladeplay when the knife is open. i hold near the opening hole and move the blade in different directions. if it moves around it has blade play and i will generally tighten the pivot because that is usually the reason why. if it doesnt get any better after tightening the pivot i would contact spyderco.

It's a matter of preference. You can force about any folder into showing some blade play. I always just lightly feel the blade while locked about midway. If it feels solid and tight I'm happy. You can pinch the tip and really put the force on and probably feel some in nearly anything.

You can feel play in just about any knife if you wiggle hard enough. But a little play doesn't hurt anything. Have you ever cut something and known a knife has play? I haven't and some of my knives do have a little bit of play. I like the pivot to be fairly loose and easy to open. This usually means a little play but I can't tell when I'm using the knife so it's fine with me.

And you use the knife when the lock is engaged so it just makes since to me, to test it when open and locked. Many knives the lock pulls everything together and puts tension on everything pulling out a lot of the play. Test it how you use it.

My caly 3 is smooth. Clean it, lightly lube it, one drop is enough, and use it for awhile and I'm sure it will smooth out. Just about every knife goes through a break in period where the action eventually changes. I would also suggest keeping the knife clipped to the pocket so it stays out of the bottom of your pocket. And feel in the bottom of your pockets for sand. If they feel dirty pull your pockets inside out before you wash them. You can also get some 1500 grit sandpaper at the auto parts store and smooth out the tang of the blade around the pivot hole if you are still worried about the action.

+1

I never test my knives for blade play. If it is exist, you will see it. Just use the knife and enjoy it. I have four Caly3 and my son has one. None of them has a bladeplay, which would bother me. But if you strong enough you can squeeze anything out of folder and if you try hard enough you can bend a fixed blade.

I don't rock on them and make it come out. I just wiggle and look or listen. I still have slight play but i can't feel it when lock is engaged. It's fine. I'll let it wear in. I prefer a knife with washers though, they're smoother.

the lockup is obviously when its in the open and locked position, but a lot of people pride their knives in being wiggle free while in the semi-open and closed position

My caly 3 zdp is as smooth as any other lockback I have and quite a bit more smooth than the FRN Spyderco lockbacks I have. Give it some time before you come to a conclusion.

Do you have other lockbacks? Because they can be more stiff than other lock styles due to their design.

I was just asking a general question. I love the knife also and am famaliar with the lockbacks. I was just wondering how others decided about blade play. I do find liner locks easier to adjust and spot than lockbacks.

If I actually have to carefully check for bladeplay, then there probably isn't enough bladeplay that should be a concern (to me).
