I just got my norton combo india stone and sharpened a few knives. I am happy with the results but there is some dark swarf left floating in the oil on the stone.

Can I just wash it with dawn or is there a better way of removing it? I dont want to ruin the stone so I will wait for a response before I do anything.

Thank you.

Oil, sharpen, wipe when done.

No need to do anymore than that. The swarf will come off with honing oil if you really want it off but it harms nothing.

Make sure you are using oil correctly: the stone should be fully saturated with oil before use. First, apply oil until the stone is fully saturated (i.e., the stone doesn't drink any more oil and the oil is staying on the surface). Then wipe the surface off and apply a few more drops to coat the surface with a sheen. This will float swarf which can easily be wiped off with a cloth after sharpening and should leave the stone more-or-less free of swarf.

If your stone is loaded with dark swarf after sharpening, and it won't come off, then the oil most likely wasn't applied correctly. Here are some videos that show what it should look like. Notice how the sharpeners apply a very small amount of oil, but the oil stays on the surface throughout the entire sharpening. That's what you want. When you wipe the oil off with a cloth afterwards, the swarf should come off with it.
