Just wonder how to get them clean? I tried all manner of things, not even a toothbrush can get in there:eek:

Throw it away and get yourself some good sharpening equipment. A spyderco sharpmaker, Lansky, or a good arkansas/water stone are good.

The alumina rods can usually be cleaned with detergent and water. It won't get all the metal out but will usually get the lion's share. If you have been sharpening cheap stainless knives you may have to work at it. Also try wiping them down with WD-40.

If you are unable to get at the little rods with a toohbrush loaded with a little kitchen cleanser, then you might try soaking them in a mild acid solution:

mix a little table salt into a glass of cola drink and let it soak.

If that doesn't work and you can't get the rods out of the holder, you're pretty well screwed.

I use ceramic rods as my preferred honing device after sharpening on the belt grinder. We keep them clean with kitchen cleanser. When they don't come clean anymore, I soak them in ferric chloride. I've used the same sets of rods for 20 years.

used dryer sheets work real good for a quick fix on stones and diamond sharpeners. haven't ever tried it on ceramic though.
