I was using my stay glow camper to open sand and gravel bags when building patio for my buddy. without saying it got filthy with both. I rinsed it and all seemed well, but now a few days later you can hear the sand in it and its tough to open and close. what's the best way for cleaning it out?

Most notable problems are the pen blade is very hard to open and close, and the main blade no longer "snaps" closed. everything else you can feel and hear the sand crackling. I've run it under water while opening, blew compressed air into it and still no change

Hi!

For something like this - I use the ultrasoundbath which my wife uses for her glasses. I think you sould let the knife (blade and tools) half opened and use handwarm water and repeat that several times until the sand is out. BTW: Don´t forget to use dishwashing-soap for the whole process.

Hope this could help.

I clean my knife from time to time with the ultrasoundbath - I always wonder, where the dirt in there is hiding...

Kind regards
Andi

When I got sand in my Adventurer, I rinsed it out well with hot soapy water but it was still gritty. I oiled the joints well and worked them. It was still gritty but eventually went away after a while when the oil finally worked the sand out.

Ultrasoundbath or putting enough mineral oil on it to float out the debris both sound like great ideas. You can also run a SAK through the diswasher cycle too with all the tools open in the utensil bins. I did it on a couple of users before and it cleans 'em up real nice.

I would suggest opening all tools and using water, dawn dish liquid and a toothbrush to clean it. You can also use a toothpick to get in the real tight places. Hope this helps.

Try an spray cleaner, Gun Scrubber, brake cleaner or the like. A little liquid with the compressed air might do the trick.

You're not the first person recommending this exact procedure. May I ask why Dawn in particular is specified by so many of the knifely persuasion?

I use dawn because it breaks down oils and removes it so gunk can easily be flushed out.

And when I'm done with the wash I normally wipe dry with a towel then use a multi tool to hold sak, knife, Ect while I use a hair dryer to blow dry it. Don't get the sak scales hot as they will melt but u want the metal hot to the touch.

I get sand in my trekker every time I take it to the beach.

When I get home I start by blasting it with Dust Off while all the tools are are open or half open. Use the straw attachment for the Dust Off can to really get in the nooks and crannies.

Then soapy water.

This is from the New York Times report on the Valdez Bird and Animal Rescue Center. According to Randall Davis of Seaworld Research Institute in San Diego,

Oiled sea otters, like birds, are cleaned with Dawn detergent.

''This is no accident,'' Dr. Davis said. ''We selected Dawn because of its rather sophisticated chemical composition, which happens to be ideal for washing sea otters and birds.''

If it is good enough to clean sea otters, it is good enough to clean my knives.

Oh the otter is soo cute. That's a darn good reason to use it also. I was actually thinking of ducks but didn't comment with them.

@Ash: You´re 100 % right! Otters are great animals. I saw one last year. I was with my nephew in Straubing (Bavaria) at a zoo. There were otters in an area. One of them was a really fool. That otter always used to swim nearby people and tapping with his paw on the big stomache ... it was really funny. Great animals. But the typical European Otter will die out :(

That pic about the otter is great. He / she looks so peaceful and just happy - getting a new style :)

Kind regards

open everything up and stick it in the dishwasher. Blow it out with an air compressor or canned air. Leave it in the sun. Saks are great.

I got some sand in my knives once, this was the only way i could get it out. You have to blast it out, washing it won't do any good. Compressed air or with a water hose with a lot of pressure.
