Greetings you all :)

I wondered what the best way is to get eventual gunk/old lubricants out of the lock of my Opinel.

I treated the handle with sunflower oil to prefent swelling when wet, but I can't get the oil out of the lock completely.

I'm afraid this will attract gunk ect.

I hope you can help me out on this.

Thanks for reading.

I'd just pop the lock off, give it a wipe down, and knock the lock back on. I've had luck simply having the lock engaged as the knife is closed, then using a pair of pliers to force the knife open past the lock. It shoots the lock off like a gun. Just make sure there isn't anything around that can shatter easily.

Canned air or an air compressor is a great way.

Definitely.

You can wash the entire knife with a good dishwashing detergent, that will help get rid of the excess oil in the lock.

Then dry the knife thoroughly with a soft cloth, using canned air (or an air compressor) to clean out any excess moisture left in the lock.

One way to take off the locking ring; have someone hold the knife or gently put it in a vise with the locking ring above the vise jaws. Take a closed needle nose pliers, and put the closed jaws in the open space between the edged of the locking ring. Gently open the needle nose plier jaws till it spreads the locking ring enough to ease up off the knife.

To replace, just place ring on top of knife and tap down till it springs back in place.

Enjoy, Opinels are great knives!
