Hey its ghost again, I have been working on my trail hawk recently and I cant seem to find anywhere how people are getting burn lines in their handles like in this image by savageicslayer:
I finally got my trail hawk the way I want it so I took it for a test spin this morning...

...add Q don't let the ebony get you down brother.

I have seen it done by wrapping wet jute string around a rifle stock and then scorching with a Mapp torch. Gave a nice finish for flintlocks, should do what you are looking for.

Just an additional caution- try this on an old scrap handle or dead/dry stick first to make sure you get the look you want. Bronze wool to smooth it down and BLO.

^^ what he said ^^ Propane torch. I use a small hand held one that has trigger starter.

I've heard of another method used to replicate curly maple - a solution of heavy rust and a very small paintbrush. Simply paint it on, the rust is carried into the wood grain and remains dark.

It was spoken of as if that was where a lot of "curly maple" riflestocks came from.
