I found a buck 501 in a tool box in an old basement i was cleaning out.. the script on the blade is kind of a cursive than standard buck print and the wood is of decent qaulity.. but i cant find any way to date one.. i know there not realy old knives just curiousity is gettin the best of me

If I'm not mistaken, the script buck indicates a pre1986 knife. That's about all I can tell you.

Fax, Can you post a photo of your 501? Buck brought that model out in Feb. 1975 and its had several changes. Your model most likely has maroon micarta handles not wood. DM

After peeking into the BCCI forms:

The script stamp was used at the 501 till 1984.
Buck started to use the birch wood in '81.
Casey, if you can make out what kind of steel
is used for your 501, Buck changed from 440C
to 425M in 1982.

Hope that helps ;)

Best,
Haebbie

Thanks for all the replys! I cant get a pick up DM.. but it deffinitly isnt the mircata handles... so from what im reading its in between a 1981-1984.. and its still in really decent shape haha.. good find id say! thanks all

Fax, a good find. Yours is wood. Like Haebbie said, wood handles came in 81, in 82 a steel change from 440C to 425M. Then in 84 block lettering tang stamp and yours is before this. A sure way to tell the steel requires testing a piece. DM

How to date a Buck 501.... Well, soft music and candle-light won't really get you far. I'd say you oughta take her out for a hike in the woods, maybe down by the pond to roll in some soft grass, or else find a nice willow tree and spread out a blanket beneath it with a little picnic and some wine.
That's how I'd date a Buck 501. ;)

Wellll --- I don't want to have a date with a Buck neither
with candle light nor with a little picnic and wine. even so
the Buck has the number 501. But may be that I make a
mistake. Puukko, have a nice time.

Hahaha well thanks guys for everything, i think i might do and polish her up a bit.. but its guna be a safe queen i think. Sentimental reasons.. I just found out this knife origianlly belong to my grandfather who passed away, who passed it doen to my uncle as a christmas gift. My uncle passed this summer so that make me the third generation owner of this knife in my family... i think im guna buy a new one for edc! It kicked my kershaws and schrades outa my pocket. I have another knife that ive been researching a while and cant seem to tell the age.. Its a schrade uncle henry i think ill make a post in the schrade forums... as for steel type i dont think its that big a deal haha, knowin its between 81-84 is good enough by me.. Thanks for the help everyone!

I would like to use this thread and ask for help. Can you please identify when my knife was made?
