I have a Busse Fat ASH I use very hard and keep in the trunk for utility. I just checked it and it has rust around the scales between the tang and the scales. The ASH does not have removable scales. I wonder if I should soak the whole knife in vinegar in hopes of getting a patina under the scales?
Or should I soak it in rubbing alcohol and then in CorrosionX?

I would drill out the pins and replace them with flat or oval headed bolts. Deal with it once and deal with it right.
Future fixes and maintenance will be as easy as taking the slabs off and cleaning the knife.

No worries, questions, concerns or trips back to the shop due to major hidden rust...

After removing the tubes & grips and cleaning the steel, the steel under the grips could be coated with something to help prevent rust (paint or something else?).

A good cleaning and something like corrosion x sounds good. Or send it out to AzTim or josh at razors edge for a refresh job.

IF you go to the Swamp Rat forum you’ll see what AzTim did for my infi Rat weiler

Have you contacted Busse ?
I know the custom shop is closed but this may fall under the warranty repair side.

It does not hurt to e-mail or call on something like this.

Just my UN-official opinion :)

Man, you just made a light go off! I have a can of CorrosionX- used to use it to waterproof ignitions, spark plug wires on dirt bikes and 4 wheelers. - It never clicked this might have a use here. I've pulled scales on a NIB BG and found crud under there and spots of flaky coating. I just cleaned it up and sprayed some Fluid Film on and reinstalled with new tubes. It never dawned on me to try that stuff.

Yeah I live in the rust belt in New England. Corrosion X, corrosion block , ACF 50, Gibbs penetrant , and fluid film are all in stock lol

I have often wondered at what point this actually becomes an issue. I have a number of users with various amounts of rust under the scales and I can’t decide how much I actually am bothered by it.

So you guys have new knives that rust from just sitting? Even with the coating?

I left a knife in the harshest GA conditions and it only tarnished the edge. Which, after use, showed no more tarnish.

Im quite curious about rust under scales because so far the majority of my knives are either sealed in a handle ie rat tang or have removable scales making rust in general a non issue. Only have a couple that are pinned that i actually use and none that ive used hard over multiple years. I see some fellas taking pictures of their busses submerged in creeks and ive always wondered how they maintain that knife.

I think most people greatly over think it, don't get me wrong, I love and maintain my knives but I have yet to see an INFI or SR101 blade that had rusted and turned to dust or even pitted for that matter, I also submerge and wash the blades I dress game with and have had nary an issue.

Yep, most knife related "rust issues" may look bad but are in fact not so. Look at all the corrugated iron roofing out here, at some point it always develops some surface rust, it seems to last another 30yrs past that point in use.
