How to determine blade angle?

I first acknowledge this is probably a beginner question. However I would like to learn how to use my work sharp properly. (1) I assume if I've got the angle wrong I'm not doing anything or ruining the edge. So how do I best estimate the angle? (2) When I attach the blade to the clamp it seems like at the base of the blade I'm grinding the clamp. How do I avoid this? Please excuse my rough attempt at explaining (2). Thanks

If you’re grinding the clamp, your angle is too shallow. But a clamp system will dictate things like this to some degree.

I’ve never like guided systems for these and other reasons. It’s why I advocate freehand sharpening.

Duh, that never occurred to me! As far as freehand you know what you're doing however I don't, sincere thanks.

I use a magnetic angle cube to get the angle. Makes it a lot easier to write down the settings on my Wicked Edge.

If you are attempting to determine the angle of a bevel... Goineometer. There are cheap ones on Amazon and the one I bought works fine, $20. There are plans on Hackaday.com for a 3D printer and plans to make them out of wood (that one works fine as well as I made one. The 3D plans are ok. Probably better by now.)
There are some expensive ones out there but I would not spring for those, the cheap ones work fine.
If you are looking for something like an angle guide to help you grind at a specific angle, well, there are those as well.
