hey, quick question for you all about ecll phones.

i have a motorola razr, cingular service. i costs me .10/message to send/recieve text messages.

my roommate likes to text message me via aol instant message (he can use the program to send me a text from his chat box--goes straight to my phone). it doesn't cost him anything to do this, and he messages me a LOT, usually for stupid crap like bringing him dvds home to watch. he knows it costs me money, but i don't think he's really grasping how much each dime racks up my cell bill. he's not a bad guy or anything.

what i want to do is disable my phone's ability to receive text messages from aol instant messenger. can this be done?

thx

Am I the only one whose first thought was, "You can buy pistol cartridges for less than ten cents each"?

No doubt disabling text messages is a better solution....

Hello There-
While you're at it, with those super human ears of yours, may I request that you also tweak the range of tuning to slightly expand your ears awareness to also include info on disabling a cell phone’s Position Locator Device, that crouches and sits hidden in all of our cell phones, yet very alert b/c it never sleeps, and it’s never once, yet showed up late. Rest assured this country’s current Admin. Got us all dialed in, and knows where you’ve been, and been, and been. And who else was there with you at the Inn.

My phone actually lets me switch ‘it’ on and off, with the caveat that it always remains on to Police and 911. Now there’s a new Yahoo Widget that’s Free to download, which enables the public to now actually see a cell pones position layered over a map, and watch it move around as they go from here to there throughout their day. Says you’ll need the other phone’s secret code that supposedly only the real owner could provide you.

Here's one you can load on a nextel phone and track it. Not bad if you have a significant other with questionable loyalties. some people use it like a huge game of tag. I don't really care if W knows where I am or not and I'm sure they don't need my gps enabled phone to know where I work or live. I guess when it comes time to run drugs across the border I'll just turn my phone off.

Oh yeah text messages. I wanted it turned off in my phone too, but cingular said they couldn't do that (yeah right). That is one of several reasons I now have a Southernlinc phone. I do know that when you buy a new unlocked sim phone you have to download some programing in order to send or recieve the text. If you can find and delete this from your phone or get an honest cingular employee to do it your problem is solved.

hahahhaha... i had considered that route, but it wouldn't have resulted in a net gain as i actually have to pay .19/round for .45acp.

Let me get this right, you are charged for sending and receiving texts? Here (New Zealand) we only have two providers but neither charges you for receiving texts, only sending and freee at weekends on the plans my kids have (which is why their thumbs are sore on Mondays).

In this region SMS are only charged to the sender and are 3c each. I rely heavily on SMS as I roam and it is great when you turn off your phone, leave it in the car, you still get the necessary info.

Why are you considering cutting a usefull service instead of nicking a beer of his each time he sends you a SMS? Tell your friend to turn on his brain and make lists of what he needs to organise so at least he only sends you one SMS rather than many.

Your aim is not that bad is it? ;)

Do it the easy way and remove the functionality from AIM itself. There is an option when you log into the program that will do this. It simply disallows your phone from acting as an instant message recipient.

This way, you can still get important text messages from other people and minimize the trivial ones.
