How to disassemble & clean Emerson?

After having my folder for 2yr, I finally took it apart. I am very good at cleaning it and oiling my knife. But, when I took it apart I noticed a little rust on the screws (the part that touches the G10). How do I clean off the rust? Is there something I should soak them in?

-Next question- I noticed that the screws appear to have no loctite thread glue. Am I supposed to add any?

Next question- Is there anything I should do while I have the blade apart besides a really good cleaning? Is there any oil etc I should apply? I usually just use tuffglide.

-Thanks and feel free to give me links to other threads about this question.

My way:

Clean everything well while disassembled
CRK grease on both sides of the washers
CRK grease on two balls:D (just a drop on the ones that ride on the blade)
CRK grease on the ends of the stop pins
Loctite (low or medium strength) on all securing screws
Teflon tape or Loctite on pivot screw
LIGHT coating of CRK on the back of the blade that the lock engages

Others will have better suggestions I am sure.

I know what you meant:D

I could the next time I need to. I don't like to take them apart if I don't need to. Going out for a lot of shark fishing in the Everglades with it though...Maybe after that if it gets bad enough...though the grease really keeps out the crap and I don't need to dissasemble often. That is really my overhaul cleaning routine.

I bet someone on here could do it sooner. Maybe even photodave?

Why in Hades would you put lube on the lock tang? Besides myself, everyone I know tries to ensure they get no lube on there when cleaning their knives. I just can't see putting anything on there but .... to each his own.

You shouldn’t have done that he’s just a boy…mmmmmmhhhhhhhhh…(Slingblade)

Well as I have stated before I don’t use my knives backwards although I do like the locks to function properly. I put grease on them to allow them to easily lock/unlock with minimal wear. After an Emerson is broken in nicely I do not really do this but if I have one that locks to the point that it takes more force than it is worth to unlock I will. It actually lets the lock engage further than without any lube. Try putting some CLP on yours and see if it doesn’t lock up tighter than you could imagine. Maybe it will not on yours, but all of mine exhibit the aforementioned behavior. So, to answer your question I just do it to make you wonder why in Hades I do it. And I like to have a slippery lock that will fail and let the blade cut my finger off when I am using my knife backwards.

So, I would give the CLP thing a try and see if it doesn’t get yours to lock better. You can always wipe it right off.

I can see your concern though.

Do you mean like the threads?

Took apart my Mini 7 just a couple of days ago. Complete takedown and scrub with a toothbrush in warm soapy water. 10 minutes tops for the whole deal, and it was ready to go. No lube. Just didn't seem like it needed it. Has anyone ever tried Zero Friction? Got it from Sportsman's Warehouse.
