I'm making a kiritsuki from dictums 33 layer stainless and vg10 suminagashi.
How should I etch it? Plain old warm ferric chloride? I've got a 1 to 10 dilution of it already.

Thanks!

never tried their stainless but on the mild steel, I use ambient temp FC 1:3,
fast etch, that's it

I have some of that steel at home. The person who sold it to me told me to use sulfuric acid. But I haven't tried it myself yet

FC room temp, 1:5 solution ( 1:3 is OK, too), etch for 1 to 2 minutes, rinse and wipe off, etch rinse and wipe off, repeat until the pattern shows like you want.

I have never heard of using sulfuric acid, but some people do use dilute muriatic acid (HCl). About 10:1 to 20:1 should be good.
