Hey guys going to blade show west this year a flying there and back! How do you guys haul your knives you purchase back home without getting into issues with TSA? Thanks for any help!

Should be as simple as checked baggage. Just buy a lockable case and check it instead of carry on. Didn’t know this was ever a problem. It’s not a firearm, are you flying out of the US after purchase?

No it will be in the US we don’t fly much at all and never flown with something like a knife purchase so just trying to make sure we do it correctly

I've never been to a big show......

Would makers mail you your purchase After the show?

I would think it would benefit them to have the ability to show product....
Or is that too much responsibility keeping it safe?

Makers/retailers typically don’t mail anything at Bladeshow in Atlanta, probably the same at other shows. I’m sure there might be some exceptions for high end or customs. I would mail them back to yourself.

Or just put them in your existing checked bags.

Just check a bag simple as that. I've flown more than I care to admit purchase a TSA approved lockable case or bag and check it.

Surprisingly harbor freight offers some nice checkable cases now
I'll actually have to go check that out. Interesting I didn't know thank you. I don't fly nearly as much as I used to but still do occasionally and always take a knife or two.

Do you have a firearm? Because if you do, fly with it, you'll need an approved locking box and you'll need to declare it and fill out a form at check in. Your airline will have detailed instructions.

When you fly back put the knives in the same box. If that type of luggage vanishes hell breaks loose. So it tends not to vanish.

Knives go in checked baggage. It's as simple as that.

Since I never like to go anywhere without at least my Victorinox Rambler, my options are:

1. check a bag and have it potentially get broken into or "lost".
2. drop ship a knife to my destination and mail it home.

My mother moved to California a few years ago, and I went to visit her for a few weeks in 2024, so I bought a new Rambler from Amazon and had it shipped to her house, then left it behind, for the next time. I didn't bother with anything else, because of California's knife laws, and I wasn't ever going to be in a place where I'd need a bigger knife, anyway. A 58 mm Victorinox is legal just about everywhere you are permitted to have any kind of knife, including Japan, which is ridiculously strict, enough so that I would worry even about having a 58 mm Victorinox, even though they meet the requirements of Japanese law.
