Saw this web page and got a good chucle from it.

Here's how to forge a knife similar to a sword.
Steps
1. Heat the metal in a forge or your own personal metal working furnace.
2. When hot, pound on an anvil to shape the metal, folding of the metal is a good way to get it to layer properly, this also increases the strength of the blade.
3. Put it in water and then reheat it slightly to temper it
4. Make sure you leave room for the tang (the part which goes inside the handle), so you actually have a knife and not just a blade.
5. Use metalworking files to grind the blade bevels. Use a whetstone to make it even sharper.
6. If you want to go it the easy way, just use some thin metal and sharpen it on a whetstone or any grinding surface.
Tips
* Don't touch the metal until cooled.
* Take your time. Knife making is something that gets better with the more time you put into it.
* Make sure you grind both sides of the blade evenly with the files; this makes a sharper blade.
Warnings
* Metal working is highly dangerous.
* Your knife will be sharp, so don't test it on your thumb!
