How to form an edge

I've been thinking the last few weeks that I'm forming my edges wrong. Why not, I've doen almost everything else wrong at one time or another.

I flat grind until I have a close to two diminisional edge and then hone at a 22 degree angle using different grits of stones. Should I be starting the secondary bevel sooner? At what point should I start the secondary angle.

The way I do it I seem to take off an awful lot of wire.

i flat or convex grind all my blades. then using a 220g then 400g i bevel in the edge on a slack belt on my 2x72 grinder. i don't care how much wire is on the edge, because once i get it off i am very happy with the strong up to 1/4" edge.
