i'm going to (hopefully) try to move to monterey bay california mid january, and i'd like to have 3 things - a map, a set of news papers, and a phone book. i have the map and the news papers, but the phone book is starting to look harder then it seemed at first...

i want it so i can get a massive list of places to apply at, and do weekend runs trying to get a job before i actually have to move.

anyone have any ideas on how to iether purchase a copy via a store, order it from somewhere, internet? is there anywhere in monterey bay itself (or any city) where a person can get ahold of a copy for personal ownership?

There's this thing called "The Internet" that lets you get instant access to all of the information that you would find in local maps, local newspapers, and local phone books.

For maps:
www.maps.yahoo.com
or
www.mapquest.com

For local newspapers:
http://www.refdesk.com/ca.html
usually you can find a paper where you can read the classifieds earlier online than waiting for the dead tree editions. That also allows you to do rapid keyword searches.

For phone listings:
www.anywho.com
or
www.yellowpages.com

Note that anywho will even to reverse phone number lookups.

For most serious job searching people use www.monster.com these days.

while monster.com is an excellent job finding source if you have even a slightly decent resume, i have a very limited job experience, mostly fast food and resturaunt. the one job that i do have that has any industrial bearing is a wiring/assembly/packing/shipping/painting job that both does not have any direct bearing, and what bearing it does have on a job application is limited by both the time i have worked there, and the scope of work i performed.

as to phone numbers via the internet, yes, were i to know where i wanted to call i could easily find the number.

however, i am looking for places to apply to, so i need a bussiness directory that has a list of names, rather then searching out a specific set of names. i would much rather have a physical phone book for this the nan internet list, simply because i can take it with me to work and to where ever i am going in town and continue my search.

The yellow pages are online too. A clever fellow might think of trying www.yellowpages.com

You get a paper phone book from the phone company. Call them up and ask and they'll mail it to you. The more phone books they can distribute the more they can charge businesses for yellow pages listing....

I think that the primary phone company in California is SBC (which is merging with AT&T and changing its name to AT&T). You might try and find the number for SBC in that area and call to ask if they drop directories at any particular businesses. They might leave some at some place like local supermarkets.

Carmel and Monterey are not a significant industrial centers. Restaurants are one of the major industries and tips can add up. Salinas or Santa Cruz are more general commercial centers. Santa Cruz is about 45 miles north up the coast, Salinas is about 20 miles inland from Monterey.
