How To Get Into Sheath Making?

I recently just made a knife out of an Condor Golok that I was fooling around with, and pretty much screwed up. I basically somehow bent the blade right where the handle ends, but

the blade was still straight other than that one bend. My question is there a particular way to start sheath making or should I just dive in, and sink or swim?

Also if you're a sheahth maker, and could give me a rough estimate, for a basic, leather, no frills, button retention sheath, I would appreciate it.

Specifications

Handle Length: 4 3/4"
Blade Length: 5"
Thickness: 5mm
OAL: 9 3/4"

Here is where I'm at, the knife is definently functional. It just needs a little TLC and a handle.

First rule of sheaths: What material do you want to make it with? Very important. Actually rather vital.

Kydex would be fun too. I think I'll check out some DYI sheath molding press insrtuctions, because the first made presses that I found are pretty expensive.

My press cost under $5 to make. Lots of good tuts on how to get into bending Kydex.. And plenty of threads on how to get started.

Good luck and have fun.

there are some good posts on here to sift through. check out youtube. and there is also an al stohlman book that helped me with the stitching. but, as some said....just start doing it. you'll figure it out. good luck.

Stick with the leather. I'm pretty sure that Kydex and it demon seed are products of Hell. Why do I say that? It's fugly, scratches fine knives, noisy and has no soul. Other than that, I guess it's okay ;)

I have played around making leather pouches for carrying first aid items when going out on all day hunts, but nothing other than functional. I decided to take this a bit further so am taking a one day class in which we will make a knife basic sheath. I figure this is a good start. I am taking in my Kabar 1276 as I hate the sheath that came with it. I would also like to give Kydex a try. It doesn't appear to be too expensive or extensive to get into it but to make some of the intricate sheaths and such that I have seen in kydex would take some doing, but you have to start somewhere. Glad to have found this forum.
