How to get oil smell out of micarta?

My dad gave me a knife for a gift but he used some sort of gun oil to coat the thing. Now everytime I touch the scales my hand comes away with a gun oil smell. I've tried a scotch brite and dish soap and that didn't seem to help at all. Any ideas?

Spray it down with brake cleaner.

I'll try that too. I have a couple (brand new, no less) that I received that were filthy with oil and stunk. Repeated washings helped, but not all the way.
