I really want to get a new job, and of course, that means interviews.
My boss is a total psycho, and you've got to a doctor's note for every time you call off sick, or you're subject to the company's policy. AND if you have to show up at least 1/2 day, no matter when the doc's appt. is.
Did I mention she's a total psycho?!?!?
Anyhow,......... I need some REALLY good excuses to get out of work without arousing too much suspicion! Ideas, anyone?
I think I'm just going to tell her I have to go to an appointment, and leave it at that, and whatever happens, happens. I don't think I can take it much longer!

Are you given sick leave? What is the company policy for taking sick leave? What I guess I am getting at is, can she ask for a note according to the policy? What about using a vacation day? You could always tell her that you are taking off for job interviews. She'll either fire you or offer you a raise to stay. In the one case you will have plenty of time for interviews, in the other you have an incentive to stay. You could try to schedule interviews over your lunch or after hours. How friendly are you with your GP? RUn by his/her office and get the note then go to the interview and then go to work.

This is usually handled with "Personal Business Leave."

Tell your boss that you have to attend to a matter of personal business. If she presses, say, "It's a family matter." There's no lie there since you getting a new job will affect your whole family.

I agree that personal buisness leave is how this is usually handled but, I get the impression that "leave" where WalkingMan works is discressionary, and up to the discression of a rather heavy handed boss. Thus, the need to circumvent absence due to illness.

An outright lie is not a great idea and faking sick is a lie. Personal business, as long as it isn't overdone, or scheduled coincidentally with local team ballgames, should be legitimate.

There is a possibility that a really psycho boss will simply refuse any time off. In that case, schedule the interviews for after hours if possible, and tell your prospective employer that your current job is at too critical a juncture for you to leave during working hours.

That should make you look dedicated and it's only half a lie. :)

I think it's weird your company won't pay you to find another job. What the hell is wrong with them?!

When I had people who didn't want to work for me, I encouraged them to look elsewhere. It saved me the trouble of firing them -- unless they were really good workers, then I gave them recommendations.

Man, you guys just do not understand. NO ONE, and I mean NONE of her employees care for her AT ALL! Including the two other managers that work for her. This woman is mean, clueless, and incompetent.
