how to grind the edges correctly on a dagger?

take that file you're gonna use ;)
grind it nice and flat if you can. and cover the whole thing in dykem or a marker of some type.

scribe out a bunch of lines to keep you in check.... a centerline on both sides
centerline on the edges, lines straight across where you want the plunges to start, then start grinding the profile of it taking our time and making sure its nice and symmetrical.

then start your grinds like a normal blade. grind one edge both sides, then flip it over and go to the next. take your time and keep those centerlines in mind to see how close your'e getting to where you want to be.

i found the layout was the biggest help for me when grinding double edged. good luck let us now how you make out

Once you get your shape or profile do not keep working on the tip until the edges are taking shape. The reason is if you over work the nicely rounded tip you could get it too thin and lose too much material off the tip. Slowly back and forth until you finally meet that center line and then the tip.

I trace out my center line using a ruler, and scribe it with brass. I use a brass rod like a pencil to leave a line, brass doesn't rub off too easily and shows good visibility.

Next I grind edge up, making passes from the tang to the tip. Yes watch that tip it is very easy to grind off too much too soon. Keep working the grind gradually back to the center line. I aproach the center line but do not grind over it. During the final finishing grinds I work up the center line making it crisp and straight, I start doing this when I reach the 220 grit stage.

As you grind stop frequently, and observe the reflection of of the light. Your grind should be straight and true. Straight and true grinds are best achieved by always keeping the steel moving and by watching how evenly you are pressing against the wheel. Don't push too much. If you are pushing the belt is old. It is best to use good belts during the important grinds for best results.
