I m working with 1084 and 1095 and would like to put a hammon on my blades. Where can I find out how? I tried the search function but came up with no description of how to do it. THANKS,Scott>

DO a search for temper lines, which is what it is. You can coat the back of the blade with refractory cement (stove gasket cement) and when you quench your blades only quench the cutting edge. The cement allows the back of the blade to cool slowly and the edge to quench quickly. The line you get is the transiion between the hard edge and soft back.

Scott, there are lots of mediums to use for the clay, too, but I have been using some stuff from Lowe's that works great. I think it's sold as "Stove Cement" or something along those lines. It comes in a standard caulking type tube and you find it with all the caulks and stuff at Lowe's. It was much easier for me to find than Satanite and it costs something like $2.50.
