how to harvesting Mother of Pearl

So like the title states im trying to learn. I guess my google-fu is weak because i cant seem to find much on it and most of it is saying exactly what ive been doing which is be diligent, patient and have a tiny xacto blade to pry/chip the shell away from the nacre. just looking for any tips yall might have for this. Call it pride or whatever but I refuse to go and buy it as im cheap and id like these knife scales to be hand made, might turn into a gift someday.
