How to hurt yourself with a Gunting.

Here is a sequence of events that can lead to an unobservant person slicing himself with the Gunting. On the off chance that there is another forumite as careless as I am, I’ll post it.

I am wearing a pair of slacks this evening whose front pockets are vertical slits. When I clipped the Gunting to the front pocket the ramp caught on the pocket and slightly opened the blade. When the Gunting slid into its clipped position the open tip cut through my pants, protruding through my pocket. I did not notice at the time that any of this had happened.

As my hand dropped to my side it found the protruding blade. I felt a pinprick on my middle finger. As I looked down I saw my finger gushing blood. It’s actually a pretty painless way to cut yourself open.

Ouch.
I'd heard that the "horn" on the Gunting could act unintentionally as a "Wave" opening feature. When demonstrating at the NYC show, Bram also warned that the "kinetic opening" technique not be used on your own leg, as it's led to a few pair of Levi's being converted to shorts with their owners still in them.

I have two pair of pants that have a slit just as you have described. My solution was to order the breakaway kydex sheath from CSSD. This fixed the cut pants. When I do not wish to wear the sheath I put an "O" ring around the knife and blade to prevent it from opening when I put it into my pocket.

Hmm Ok we need to work on the Blade stop..the detent and make it firmer...I've never had it open on me but If its doing it to you guys,,thats enough of a problem..

I'd also make the blade tighter in the pivot area..so it takes kinetic force to open it..use a 3/32 hex head...
I'll make sure this gets to the engineering dept..

thanks for the input!!!

Hey guys...the pointy end of the knife is supposed to cut other things....not yourself. I guess it all comes back to Bram's Rule #1-Steele cuts flesh. (sorry, I couldn't resist the urge to razz ya!)

Seriously, I do hope you didn't hurt yourself too badly. I've cut myself a few times trying out different stuff with my knives. It's no fun.

Congratulations!!

I find it hard to accept a knife as truly my own unless it's tasted a little of my own blood.

Maybe I'm the only crazy one here, but for solo training, including deployment to strike, I use the knives I carry. As a matter of fact, in large part, this determines what I carry. This also means you're using live steel. Sometimes a nick or two is the price you pay to learn respect for your tools.
