How to improve grip traction on micarta scales

This old Benchmade mini rukus has been one of my all time fav folders. However the micarta scales are really slippery.

Is there anything I can do without wrecking the appearance of the micarta to improve the grip a bit? For instance, could I sand it with a certain grit to rough up the handles at a few spots?

You can also use an electric engraving pencil to roughen spots.

Should I sand the whole surface of the handles, or just certain spots? Not sure what it would end up looking like if I just do part of it.

Up to you, your knife :) . I would sand the entire surface. Micarta will wear back to a near polish with use over time.

Makes sense. I assume to avoid getting crap all over the knife mechanism, I should completely disassemble the knife? Sorry for dumb question, never sanded on micarta before and and not sure best technique.

It definitely makes it easier when the scales are removed. You can sand without having to dance around screws and thumbstuds and not worry about particulates settling within the internals. Micarta dust is also listed as a potential skin and eye irritant so you may want to take necessary precautions beforehand.
