How to Increase the Detent on the Kershaw Induction

Hey all,

Just figured I would share a simple DIY detent increase for the Kershaw Induction that I figured out. I did this on my Kershaw RAM a few years back, and I would imagine it works on the ZT MUDD too. This is super easy.

Disclaimer: I would HIGHLY recommend watching a full disassembly video before attempting this so that you know what you're getting into. EpicSnuggleBunny has an excellent video on youtube. The HAWK lock can be a little tricky and parts can go flying if you don't know what you're doing. It's not all that bad though.

Basically, all you do is put a little bit more spring behind the metal piece that works as the detent. I found the spring inside a small Bic lighter is the perfect size. The large Bic's spring is too big, so don't try that. Has to be small one.

Take off the cover and wheel on the lighter. The spring and flint should come flying out. Cut the spring to the size that you want.

Okay, I cut two different lengths. I ended up using the one on the right, which is maybe a 1/8th inch. The longer the length of spring you put in, the stronger the detent will be. However, this comes at a cost: 1) it's slightly harder to get the knife back together the more spring you put in (not really that noticeable though). And more importantly, 2) if the spring is too strong, the knife won't be able to overcome the spring when it's closing back up (if you're closing it like you would a benchmade). That being said, the bit of spring that I put in was not quite enough for my taste. It didn't increase the detent as much as I would have liked, and the knife still closes easily. So I may go back and try again with more spring. You can tune this to your liking.
Here's a pic of how the detent works (the new spring hasn't been put in yet)

So the spring is going to go on the bottom metal bar/piece. This is what affects the detent.

I put a bit of thick bearing grease on the springs. This is to stop the rattling sound from the little rods that go inside the springs. Works great!
It's gonna be a little squishy, but that's alright.

Shimmy it all back together.. and viola!

Love this knife. Here's a pic next to my Steampunked Kershaw RAM. Maybe that should be the next project on my Induction...
