I have have an older SERE Operator with a molded sheath. I would like to carry the knife with out using the extension plate and rubber keeper ring. The molded sheath dose not have enough retention to safely carry the blade. I am hoping I can just take a heat gun to the sheath and give a little squeeze, but thought I'd check with the hive mind first. Thanks, Woody

A hair drier works great for small adjustments on kydex. A heat gun would be fine, just take it slow, watch the distance and dont stay in one place for too long. Once it heats up it takes seconds to go from soft and workable to limp.

BE,

The SERE Operator's come in one of two sheaths.... one is cordura/nylon? with a plastic "insert" and the other is a full plastic sheath. I'm assuming you have this:

Even though it's not kydex (plastic) it will definitely "heat" form. A paint stripping/actual heat-gun will work well, if not just take a hair dryer and follow these steps:

1. Make SURE that you do this with the knife still in the sheath.

2. Use a wet utility rag to cover/wrap any and all areas you don't want to affect.

3. Simply heat a "spot" and then with a glove on just press down and in a minute or so it'll be hard again and moled to the
exact point you pressed it to.

4. Work from the rear of the sheath so it won't show. Try not to let the plastic "shine", you'll see kydex sheaths where sheath
makers have this too and it's "no bueno".

Good luck and let us know how it comes out.

Oh yeah... there's also step 5

5. Relegate the old sheath to "truck" use and send me your knife for a new pair of "fancy pants" made of Kydex!:D
