Greetings fellas:

I recently completed my second Loveless style New York Special and would like to make a third, as close to the original as possible. That means installing a snap and making a sheath to match. Anyone out there have any guidance they can offer in terms of snap installation and material used?

Best regards,

TK

TK, here is an idea . Get some s.s round stock and make a cutler rivet . The male end fits inside the snap, the other end is the pin for the other side . Epoxy and press fit together . What do you think ?

Buy the snap

It comes in 4 pieces.
2 for the male side, 2 for the female side.
They peen pin post to hold the 2 pieces together

Use 3 of the 4 pieces.
Skip the left most piece in the pic

On the female side, just replace the domed head that has the center post- with a slot head machine screw - pan heads are thick.

- grind the slot of the screw down to eliminate the slot & provide clearance for the snap to fit in.
and use the threaded shank of the screw in your loveless rivet like you do now.

Use good quality ones

TK,

Use a Corby bolt, the female part is used on the side opposite the snap. Then grind down the body of the male part until you end up with what looks like a thin headed screw. Polish the head and countersink for the snap socket.

Apply epoxy to the female section of the Corby, make sure you get epoxy inside the threaded section and install it into the handle. Put the snap on the other side and start the male screw in the female threads. I will usually push down on the screw head with a pencil eraser, which seems to give a little grip, and turn the female section to tighten every thing up.

Loveless used Baby Dot Durable snaps on his original New York Specials, they are smaller than the regular snaps we use on sheaths.

Take care

Charles
