I just ordered some to finish out my forge but I dont know how to install it. It is a round forge so maybe that will help. Thanks, Charles

Figure out the inside circumference of the forge for each layer and cut to length leaving an additional 1". Then just put it in and it will stay in place. The additional material acts like a compression spring to help hold it in place. Nothing else reqd.

Yes! Work in a well ventilated area or outside away from other people and wear a respirator. The ceramc fibers are very fine and can be a danger if inhaled. It's also important to coat the exposed sufaces of the wool in your forge with an appropriate refractory material. This serves a dual purpose, it increases the performance of your forge and it protects you from ceramic fibers in your forge exhaust. -Guy Thomas

Thank you Guy. Do I also need to where gloves? And what refactory material should I coat it with and how do I coat it? Thanks, Charles.

Gloves and long sleeves are a good idea, just like working with fiberglass insulation. I even took my clothes off in the garage and threw them straight into the wash by themselves because I didn't want any loose ceramic fibers around my kids. Might be a little overboard, then again I might not.
The only refractory for coating that I am familiar with is ITC-100, designed for the ceramics industry as a coating for the inside of kilns. You just paint it on with a brush or it can be used in a sprayer. A search of ceramics supply houses might turn you up some, but I got mine from Jay Hayes. There is a link to his email and web site from Ron Reil's site. If you look under my post for my "Mini-forge inferno!" you will find the link to Ron Reil's site. I think satanite can also be used but I was under the impression that it was more of a mortar type consistency. The ITC-100 is expensive, around $24.00 for a pint and I only needed half a pint to coat my freon tank mini-forge. There must be other coatings that can be used though. -Guy Thomas

I have seen others use "waterglass" or satanite to coat the Kaowool w/ but I really believe in the ITC100. Great product, REALLY increases the heat output. The folks that install insulation for a living generally wear the paper particle masks when handling the wool. Is it bad for you - damnifino - but why take the chance. Coat all exposed wool w/ the ITC100 and that encapsulates it. Recoat areas that you bump and expose when forging.

I have some stuff called Ins-Tuff ceramic fiber rigidizer, it's made by AP Green. Have you guys heard of this, and is it safe.

Bill, Where can I find ITC 100. All I can find here is Cirro safe (spelling) and they have to special order it at that.

I have been using just plain old Kaowool but I'm building a mini-mongo and I'm afraid it will be a little hard on the unprotected stuff.
