How To How to install pocket clip: what thread tap?

Hello. Found a deal on a benchmade oeser Tengu. Want to put a pocket clip on it. What is the typical thread used for the screws that secure clip to scales/stainless liner? Need to find the appropriate tap for the job. Any suggestions helpful. Thanks

I use #2X56TPI screws and taps for pocket clips applied to Ti, Al, and/or stainless steel scales. For plastic scales, I use #2X56TPI Helicoils which utilize a special drill and tap specifically designed for the insert. Some manufacturers use a threaded liner to anchor their clips, but I like a few more threads than those liners provide.

I use 2-56 of 1-72s. Even though the 1-72s seem small, they hold very well for me. I used them to attach a clip to Micarta scales with 1-72s, only tapping into the Micarta. Accidentally bent the clip several times. No damage to the screws or Micarta when I took the clip off to bend it back.

Here's another option for installing a pocket clip without using a tap.

McMaster sells these little threaded inserts that can be press-fit into handle material (wood, FRN, G10, micarta) They are stainless steel, measure 1/8th" long, 1/8th" diameter, and are threaded for 2-56 screws.

Installation requires a #32 drill bit to produce a snug fit, and I recommend using a 1/8th" drill bit to enlarge the opening of the hole to make it easier to press them into the handle material (lightly tap with a hammer). The flanged end of the insert can also be countersunk if desired.

They can be found by searching the McMaster website for item number is MSO4-256-4. They cost $4.66 for a pack of 25.

I don't remember the sizes but I found tiny taps and stainless socket head screws at my local big box store. I was changing an older Kershaw to tip up carry using a extra Benchmade clip I had lying around. Everything went well considering I was tapping a hardened liner and using the smallest tap I have ever seen in person while using a pair of vice grips as a tap wrench.
