hello, i have a decent knife collection that has value over a thousand dollars and although it just sits displayed on a bookshelf each knife onits box, im not sure if i should do something a little more elaborate when i have kids and move into a city where theft could be a reality. you cant fend off attackers when youre not home i guess. i like accessing it and spending time with it, swapping out current day carries, so i dont want to lock it in a safe really. any ideas?

I have a thousand dollar computer that I leave on the floor frequently. Don't worry that much about the collection until it hits 5 digits ;) your average burglar won't know how much a sebenza is worth.

Buy a Husky or Craftsman tool chest and keep them in there. I got a black Husky tool chest at a local hardware store for about $40, has three sliding drawers and a top deep space for tools and such. Great dea. Also, buy toolbox liner for it.

The tool chest is good, but can grow legs. I put my high dollar ones in the gun safe. It's bolted to the wall. You also get the added benifit of controlling moisture so you can prevent rust easier.

Check with your insurance company on how much they cover your cutlery. If they take your blades, they are going to take everything else, so you want to make sure you have enough coverage. Itemize everything you own.

With the kids, the biggest protection you can have is education. Grill them often about not touching without an adult, and show them the dangers of misuse. Eddie Eagle is great on DVD for firearms, and works for blades also.

A safe, bolted to the concrete floor, is your safest bet. Of course, a safe costs a grand, but you can use it for important papers for the rest of your life.

Just put them in your night stand...

Start a second collection ;)

second this!!

do what I'm doing right now and get a home insurance list for them, so if some low life decides to rob you of whats yours you can get it replaces, Learned this the hard way

or get a bolted safe, works well too

When you go out of town, put them in a small box in your dirty laundry. The last place a burglar will want to look.

At one point I had a display cabinet made for the knives I wanted to show off. The display case has two doors that swing open and shatterproof plexi is attached from the back side of those doors. The case is bolted directly to the studs in the wall. The knives are held by pegboard with hooks. each hook has shrink tubing on them so that they dont scratch the handles and flatten the edges. There is a latch on the front with a lock. Im sure if someone used a crowbar they would get into it, but they may feel its not worth the effort. On the other hand they may look at it and think there was a reason it was locked. So it could go both ways. One thing is for sure, they aint getting the case off the wall.
