How to lighten laser engraving?

I've got a Ritter MiniGrip and I kind of want to get rid of the dark laser engraved lettering. I want to leave the actual embossed letters, and just remove the dark bits.

Any idea what material is used to create the dark bits, and what sort of solvent might eliminate it?

So is the dark area recessed in the embossed letters? If so then you could possibly sand/bead blast the letters and polish them back to a shine. Not everyone (including myself) has acces to a blaster so another possible alternative may be to use a small wire wheel brush on a Dremel, but the final finishing process may take longer.

-EDIT- I dont own a knife with embossed laser etched letters, (just laser etched on a BM) so I may be totally wrong here. I'm sure someone else knows a lot more about this

It's not embossed, really. But there's a definite recess that defines the lettering. And yeah, the dark material is in the recess. It's a Benchmade MiniGrip.

I'm all out of ideas. I tried searching for info to find out what makes it dark (such as a chemical reaction, burning, etc) with no luck. Good knife choice though, good luck with it. I got my first Benchmade a few weeks ago and now I want more, I gotta have an Axis lock.
