I just got a hand-made philipino bali from an auction site. It seems good, but it is very tight (ie it wont swing quickly). Theres some black gunk perhaps oil residue I've done my best to clean up. Anyone have any recommendations how to loosen the action up? WD40? Mineral oil?

I have sort of an unorthodox method...I'll tey to explain it as detailed as possible..

Hold the bite handle, with the blade in it(closed position) in one hand..and the safe handle in the other hand(open position)...so basically the knife is now half open..

Then, put pressure on the pin..bending in both directions...

and repeat with the other handle...

Just don't go too far..

I discovered a good method by accident when I took a brand new and very tight balisong to a party. Naturally I showed it off ... I had just bought it ... and it turned out there were about ten expert balisong flippers present. :O Nobody was drinking anything but coffee (it was a computer geek party) and they all seemed to know what they were doing ... so I let them all play with it. Every time one got tired of it another would take over and that knife got played with continously for hours. It would have taken me a week to break it in if I'd had to do it alone.

It's also a good way to discover friends who share your interest in balisongs, and who knows ... you might learn some new moves. I did.
