How To Maintain Edge On Busse Knives?

As we all know from a recent famous flamefest that got locked down, I have a Steel Heart, and had a bit of edge distortion while chopping with it. How do I maintain this edge? Andy is really hard to get hold of and, besides, he got me the knife at Superman-like speeds and has done his end of the deal (although it won't hurt my feelings if he replies to this).

It appears, from some of the replies I got, that the odd BM or SH may need a bit of edge work to get to full potential. That's not really surprising.

To The General - get your Busse from Andy Prisco at www.sharperinstinct.com. He'll get you a REAL Battle Mistress for only a taste more than the price you're being quoted for a Basic 9 elsewhere. Andy's quality people and has super service (when you can raise him on the phone - best is to leave a message). I've beaten on my Steel Heart and it's truly an amazing knife.

Anyway, call Andy. No point wasting money or time.

Frank,
Cliff Stamp, had written a piece on something similar. You can try searching past threads. I myself have asked Andy to help me out. I am not very good at sharpening and dulled my police recruit. I took some advice from Ryu and bought a sharpening system from the Razors Edge. I need to know how to sharpen and maintain an edge.

WTF,
I use the Razor Edge System Fine stone as my actual medium stone. I use the Spyderco sharpmaker rods for medium/fine to fine. and the Spyderco Ultra Fine Bench Stone to gloss it up. Nice little system and it makes those Busse knives super sharp! And the rest is just keep your angle straight when you pull the knife across the stone. None of the stones above need messy oil or water either, so they are viable to use anywhere easily. You just gotta scrub them once every 100 sharpenings or so.

First impressions are usually the scale by which we are judged unless we make our second with something sharp and pointy.

Ryu,
I have the Razors Edge sharping stones also. What do you use to clean up your stones? I just blast them with water. Have your stones started to dish out yet? If they have have you flattened them back out? And how did you flatten them out?
Thanks for your help.
Shawn

Thanks for the kind comments Frank...it should be known that Frank and I did eventually speak on the phone about sharpening....the day after this thread began.

In the meantime, the suggested method on sharpening from the Busse Shop is...

1) Get a ceramic stick.
2) Strop the left, flat back slash of the knife...do not push the knife into the stick..rather, pull the knife toward you from base of the blade to tip...as you would on a leather strop...this forms a small wire which will fold toward the convex side...a few passes will do.
3) Strop both sides of the knife with a compound charged leather strop to get the wire off.

This procedure works for me all the time and works well.

MrCas,
I just use Ajax and a plastic brush under the sink. Clean them like plates. That is the ceramic ones. I think the RES stone needs no cleaning as its surface only needs to be swept once per use. If I am not mistaken the RES stones has a break away surface that allows it to cut consistantly.

Andy,
You will never know how frustrated I got sharpening my Busses untill I read that you sharpen "edge trailing". It took me days to get one knife sharp. Then I read the sharpening instructions which came with a basic 9 (which was the first time I had ever seen Busse sharpening instructions) and my knives have stayed razor sharp for a long time now.
