How do you make a bedroll, not the kind that you wrap around yourself that is shaped like a horse shoe, the other one when you tie it up and tie a strap on it?

Thanks

I've never done it, but I found this:

http://camping.about.com/cs/generalinformation/ht/bedrolls.htm

Here's the main part:

"Here's How:

1. Place poncho flat on the ground.
2. Place first blanket with one edge down center of poncho.
3. Place second blanket with one edge at middle of first blanket. (The blankets are thus staggered.)
4. Alternate blankets in the same way, until all are down. Fold a sheet in half lengthwise and place it in the middle.
5. Starting with the last blanket you put down, fold blankets, alternating in reverse order, until all are over the middle. Pin with blanket pins at bottom, if poncho does not snap together, or else fold under.
6. Fold poncho over. Snap together if there are snaps on bottom and side.
7. When packing up, put your night things and toilet articles inside and roll from the bottom. Tie roll with a rope and appropriate knots." - camping.about.com (David Sweet)

I've tried the method above. Works great, even sans-poncho.

Anybody know how to do the horseshoe method? My curiosity is sparked.

Hey, this is the kid of bedroll they wrote about in the Boy Scout manual I used 40 years ago: it didn't work then and it don't work now!!

Figure a nice thick wool blanket. Then add another blanket. Then a ground sheet. Then a sheet(!). Then clothes and toilet stuff and.......Then fold it all up legnthwise, just like the book says.......:

THEN: roll it all up. You should have a roll about a foot in diameter and maybe 3 feet wide if you are using regular sized blankets........ NOW: try to bend that in half!!

I think that bending it it half is meant to apply to the style where it is rolled lengthwise, i.e. from one side to the other, rather then from top to bottom.

I layed out my poncho, then layed out the poncho liner and the wool blanket on the poncho. I folded the edges of the poncho so that it lapped over the blanket and liner and then folded the poncho so that it was no more than 42" long. I rolled the package tightly and lashed it in four places. Lashed it to one side of my small 12X12 combat pack, pulled it across the top of the pack and lashed it to the other side. Lashed it in two places on top of the pack and it's good to go. I also carry a small pad lashed to the bottom of my pack, because my old bones dont like the cold ground anymore. I also carry a second poncho for cold, wet and windy conditions.

Grant,
Mark Baker's longhunter video series has alot of one blanket "tricks" including the bedroll with tumpline set up. Very interesting 18th century "tactical".
Do a search on Pioneer video and it should turn up.
hope this helps!
