How to make a KA-BAR style handle?

Hi guys, I haven't really visited these forums in a long time, but I need some help. My friend's coming home from marine boot camp in a few weeks and I wanted to make a knife for him. He loves KA-BARs so I was thinking I could make something similar looking, and give it to him at his homecoming party. I've only made simple handles with scales though, and I have no clue how I would make the handle on this thing. Any help or ideas would be much appreciated.

think those are called "stacked leather handles" and the Ask Toooj thread in the KA-BAR subforum has an explanation somewhere of how they do it.
