how to make a secondary bevel

Hi all, I have a 1095 blade ready for its final edge. (so I think) The blade is 1/8 width, and the primary bevel is cut at a 5% angle.
The width of the edge is a little less than the width of a dime. I've been practicing trying to put a 5% secondary bevel on the edge using the same 1 x 30 Belt Grinder but my hands aren't steady enough to keep the angle consistent (its crap). I have some blades that I am really proud of that are all at this stage and I am not sure what to do. I'm thinking of buying some diamond stones and attaching them to my hand jig somehow so I would have control over the edge. Other than that I can only think to buy some sort of sharpening system.
Any suggestions?

much appreciated.

A US dime is about 0.053" inches thick. In my opinion that is way too thick before sharpening, regardless of the purpose of the knife. That's still more than 1/3 of the thickness at the spine (0.125"). I would take it down to 0.02" or even thinner depending on the purpose, before sharpening. I often use a coarse diamond stone in a guided system for mine, but as long as you can hold a steady angle then a coarse stone shouldn't take too long.
I like the precision of a guided system, but they are pretty expensive and not strictly necessary.

Holy crap that is pretty!
Did you use a guided system for this knife? if so which one?
Thanks for your feedback, that makes sense.

I have a Wicked Edge system, but I'm not going to suggest you spend that much money. A DMT diamond block in 2"x10" or 2"x8" should be available for around $100 and will serve well. I have one and still use it quite a bit especially on large knives. You could combine it with a way to hold your angle.

I agree it would be nicer if you could thin down your initial edge before sharpening. Half of what you already got.

Something not mentioned. If you can take your platen off?
You can then put your final edge on with the slack belt running away from you

Yep...we've all been there. Your
just not quite done grinding your primary bevel yet. What are you going to use this knife for? That will help you determine the thickness behind your edge your looking for. Hard chopping vs kitchen use require different edges.....unfortunately we can't one that does them all well.

I'll try that as well. Tks
