i am making a folder and i just got all the parts in but i could not find a manufactured pocket clip that i liked so i have decided to make a pocket clip out of the left over titanium that i got for the liners.

my question is can i just bend the titanium to look how i want it to look or do i have to heat it up or what?

i will also be starting a thread on my folder project

If the liner material is springy enough for a liner lock, it ought to be suitable for a pocket clip. Halpern used to sell prebent Titanium clip blanks.

i know i can use the titanium i have can i bend the titanium with out weakening it????

You can bend it toi about 45 deg without heat, anymore than that and it should be heated. You won't weaken it.

Not being much of an expert, I held off posting... expecting that you'd have dozens of good answers by today. {shrug}
Bottom line is it depends on the thickness of Ti that you are using AND - like Stan pointed out - the "sharpness" of the angle that you are trying to bend. I have made a couple of pocket clips from 0.05" 6al-4v and have used heat for both. Without heat I see a bit of rippling & separation in tight bends. I have heard - but have no personal experience with it - that thinner Ti (like <=0.04") is more forgiving to cold bending.
I hope this was helpful.

http://www.knifewerks.com/Tools/Clip_Brake.htm

This shows the whole process, smart tool he made there.
And there are now benders for sale out there based on that one !
Much more refined though.
That one was built with material I had on hand.

Like said before, just use a torch, bend it, and let it air cool.

.040" Ti is my favorite, but thicker material can be done.
Anything over 40, and you really gotta use a lot of heat, and go pretty slow.
At least on really tight bends.

Too much heat (over 750 degrees F.) will make Titanium brittle. It reacts with Oxygen, grease, oil, etc. at elevated temperatures. This is why Titanium is welded in a vacuum chamber or an Argon tent. Titanium can be tempered and/or annealed. I don't know the procedure for either operation. I would try cold forming using obtuse angles.

is there a way to make a nice looking clip without such a clip brake ?

so many have so great and simple ideas so mabye someone could share his quick and dirty clip brake or way of making clips

thx
